Kundadri: A hilltop above the clouds
Tucked away in the lush Western Ghats near Agumbe, Kundadri Betta feels like a quiet escape suspended above the world. As the winding road climbs through dense forests, the noise of everyday life gradually disappears, replaced by cool mountain air, birdsong, and occasional curtains of mist.
Standing approximately 826 metres above sea level, the hilltop offers sweeping views of forest-covered valleys, distant hills, cultivated fields, and water bodies shimmering along the horizon. At sunrise, the landscape slowly emerges from beneath a blanket of clouds, washed in gentle shades of gold and orange. During the monsoon and post-monsoon months, the entire region transforms into a seemingly endless expanse of green.
Adding to Kundadri’s peaceful atmosphere is an ancient Jain temple dedicated to Parshwanatha, the 23rd Tirthankara. Two tranquil stone ponds beside the temple reflect the sky and surrounding greenery, giving the summit an almost timeless quality. The simplicity of the temple, combined with the vast natural landscape around it, makes the hill feel both spiritually significant and wonderfully secluded.
Kundadri Betta is more than just a viewpoint—it is a place to pause, breathe deeply, and appreciate silence. Whether you visit for the sunrise, the panoramic scenery, photography, or simply a few peaceful moments away from city life, the hill leaves you with a sense of calm that lingers long after the journey back.
The drive from Shivamogga to Kundadri Betta is a scenic journey through the heart of Malnad, passing green paddy fields, areca-nut plantations and quiet countryside roads. Beyond Thirthahalli, the surroundings become increasingly forested and peaceful. The final ascent is steep and narrow, with sharp bends that require careful driving, but the refreshing mountain air and glimpses of the valleys make the journey as memorable as the destination.
